Personal Development – By Benne Clark
“Leadership” seems to be one of those words that is thrown around, over-used, and under-minded. However, the question you need to ask yourself is “What Does It Mean To You?”
Here is my perspective on the two types of “Leadership”.
A Leader by Title
In order to be a “leader”, one does not have to have any special skill or knowledge or credentials. They need only be the first one who got in line that day, such as a group of children following another child. A leader by title is often neither efficient nor effective, but they will lead you somewhere.
A Great Leader
Great leaders do not create followers; great leaders create other leaders. The “leader by title” goes through the motions without any true effort into leading a team of followers. Great leadership has less to do with looking over the shoulders of people and more to do with empowering others to look over their own shoulders after they have properly been trained.
Quick Question: Which Type Of Leader Are You?
You really need to know at some point in time if you ever want to see enormous success in business. To speed up the your process and to give you some value to think about, I provided a few categories to help you get clarity, get moving, and most importantly, “Get Results”.
Category One - 8 Simple Leadership Attitudes
1. Positive Attitude
This is what makes your team keep going even when they don’t want to. When everyone is talking about the bad economic times, you are talking about making money and creating success.
2. Winning Attitude
You know you can win, it is that simple. Failure is not an option and you are not willing to accept anything less.
3. Sharing Attitude
“We did this”, is your battle cry. You never say, “I sponsored… I made… I did this and that”. You believe it’s not all about you and what you accomplished.
4. Caring Attitude
How can I help you with what you are struggling with? What do you need? How is your family? Remember, “No one cares what you know, until they know that you care.”
5. Schedule Attitude
Don’t waste people time or take advantage of their time. The time of other people who you lead is important. The meeting starts at 3. Make sure it starts at 3. Stay on schedule.
6. Discipline Attitude
Hold yourself as accountable as you hold others. Have character and stick to it. Cut out any unnecessary distraction and just get it done with diligence.
7. Contagious Attitude
Inspire others to have that, “I want to be like you” feeling, or that “I want to lead like you” feeling. When you lead with the right intentions, your attitude is totally contagious and you will create success.
8. Focused Attitude
This is what we are going to do. This is when we are going to do it. This is where we are going to go. I love you, but right now we are on a mission – Stay focus!
Category Two - 2 Simple Steps to Leadership
Step One: Really Listening
If you do not know how to “Shut up and Listen,” you will never be a great leader. Remember – He who asks the questions controls the conversation. Learn to ask more questions and listen.
Step Two: Decision Making
A great leader needs to have the ability to make a decisive decision in a timely manner. The higher you go in an organization the faster you need to make decisions. All great leaders make the tough decisions.
Category Three - 10 Attributes of a Leader
1. Take care and provide for the family
2. Organized to the point of routine
3. Willing to work diligently
4. Exercise self discipline
5. Maintain a relax mental attitude
6. Focus on doing what’s right; not popular
7. Values, beliefs, and integrity are never compromised
8. Respect everyone without showing partiality
9. Investing in knowledge and teaching others
10. Have a strong will and a purpose – your “Why”
Understand - Leadership is more about taking consistent action; not position. Leadership is about what we do and how we do it; not what we preach and how we preach it. Strive to become well rounded with a broad knowledge of your industry.
Bottom Line: Be the very best that you can be and others will emulate your attitude, thus creating another Leader.
